To make the process smooth, we ask that you please contact us by phone or online prior to your visit to establish interest, so that no trip is wasted. Our business does not loan against machine-made rugs.
Authentic Persian rugs are handmade on looms and placed in the home of the man or woman weaving it. It takes almost a full year to complete the carpet. Turning your rug over and examining the stitching for slight irregularities in the weave serves as a great indicator of the hand making process. You will also be able also see a clear pattern of the carpet on the underside of a handmade rug.
Several types of wool are used to make Persian carpets. If yours has a sheen that increases with age, your wool was taken from a live animal. The lanolin and oils contained in the fibers prolong the life of your carpet and are softer than other types of wool. Carpets that are made of dead and recycled wool are dull and rough to the touch, giving them little value.
Silk Persian rugs are also valuable, but distinguishing real silk from manufactured is difficult. You can identify a true silk rug by rubbing the palm of your hand over the surface for several seconds. If your hand becomes warm, the silk is most likely real. Manufactured silk doesn’t warm to the hand. Silk carpets have a high sheen, tight weave, and a fringe of real silk. Washing the rug with chemicals, any type of fading, and poor repairs can negatively affect the value of your carpet.
On occasion, we may request that you leave your items with us for further evaluation and authentication.
